Next Gen NBN
General
What is the Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network?
The Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (Next Gen NBN) is a nationwide fibre network that aims to deliver high speed broadband of up to 1Gbps to all physical addresses in Singapore including homes, offices, schools and government buildings. Next Gen NBN users are expected to enjoy high upload and download bandwidth that will translate to ideal streaming experiences and low network latency. Next Gen NBN coverage is expected to reach 60% of homes by end 2010 and 95% of Singapore by mid 2012.
Who will offer the NGNBN service?
The NGNBN is structured into 3 layers : the Network Company (NetCo), the Operating Company (OpCo) and Retail Service Providers (RSPs). The NetCo will lay the passive network infrastructure, while the OpCo will operate the active electronics to provide bandwidth services to RSPs like StarHub which, in turn, will provide retail services to end-users. IDA selected NetLink Trust as the NetCo in September 2008 and Nucleus Connect Pte Ltd as the OpCo in April 2009.
Will Cable broadband customers be migrated over to Fibre Broadband Plans?
No, it is not compulsory for Cable broadband customers to switch to Fibre Broadband. However, it is highly recommended for users who perform multiple bandwidth intensive applications that require high upload speeds.
What is the difference between Cable Broadband and Fibre Broadband?
Cable broadband is transmitted over Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial network that provides Fibre-to-the Node (FTTN). The fibre connection terminates at the node which is located less than 1km away from the home. The coaxial cable wiring continues the connection from the node into the home.
Fibre Broadband is transmitted over Next Gen NBN that provides Fibre-to-the-home (FTTH). The fibre connection terminates within the home.
Though the transmission of data network and fibre network is different, data transmission speed between FTTH and FTTN is less than I nanosecond. Fibre Broadband is recommended for users who perform multiple bandwidth intensive applications that require high upload speeds.
I’ve been a Cable broadband customer for many years. Why am I still subject to a new 12 months service contract?
As a RSP, StarHub will need to buy wholesale network services from Nucleus Connect in order to provide services to customers via NGNBN. As part of this arrangement, a minimum subscription period of 12 months is required. This is independent of our Cable broadband service that is provisioned on our own HFC network which is a separate network from NGNBN.
I am shifting to a new house. Why am I still subject to all the charges even though I am still subscribing to Fibre Broadband at my new home?
As a RSP, StarHub will need to buy wholesale network services from Nucleus Connect in order to provide services to customers via NGNBN. As part of this arrangement, there are administrative costs incurred for terminating the fibre service at your previous home and activating the fibre service at your new home.
I am currently a Cable broadband customer. Am I eligible to upgrade to a Fibre Broadband plan?
Yes. You will be able to upgrade to Next Gen NBN subjected to certain terms and conditions. There will however be a new 12 months service commitment.
More details will be provided at a later date.
I do not have the Termination Point (TP) installed. Can I subscribe to Fibre Broadband?
StarHub recommends that you contact NetLink Trust to have your TP installed. Once your TP has been installed, you can call our sales hotline at 1630 to sign up for Fibre Broadband.

How much are the 3rd Party Charges and what are they for?
As the termination point is provided by NetLink Trust , any charges incurred will be passed through to StarHub, as a RSP, to charge our customer. In cases where you have missed the initial rollout by NetLink Trust, the charges below will apply.
- HDB - $162.00
- Landed - $291.60
- Cabling - $2.16 per 5m
After initial 15m from fibre entry point (for Pre- COPIF 2013 buildings)
After initial 25m from fibre entry point (for COPIF 2013 buildings) - If patching required at MDF room - $161.50
When will my residence be fibre ready?
The detailed rollout schedule and plans are available to the public on NetLink Trust’s website. You can check your rollout schedule (by quarterly period) by keying the address postal code at the following link: rollout.netlinktrust.com

Technical
What is a typical wireless setup for the NGNBN service?
You will need to connect the ONT to the TP. The Wireless Router is then connected to one of the ports on the ONT. Because the wireless router enables home networking, you can then connect wifi enabled devices in your home to the wireless router.
Will my Cable broadband speed improve with Next Gen NBN cabling?
The NGNBN service is provisioned on a separate access network operated by OpenNet and Nucleus Connect. Thus, it will not interfere with your existing Cable broadband service.
What are the major differences between a Cable and Fibre Network?
Cable broadband is transmitted over Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial network that provides Fibre-to-the Node (FTTN). The fibre connection terminates at the node which is located less than 1km away from the home. The coaxial cable wiring continues the connection from the node into the home.
Fibre broadband is transmitted over Next Gen NBN that provides Fibre-to-the-home (FTTH). The fibre connection terminates within the home.
Though the transmission of data network and fibre network is different, data transmission speed between FTTH and FTTN is less than one nanosecond. Fibre broadband is recommended for users who perform multiple bandwidth intensive applications that require high upload speeds.
Do I need to buy additional equipment to use the Next Gen NBN service?
You will need the Termination Point (TP) and Optical Network Terminal (ONT), installed by OpenNet and Nucleus Connect respectively.
Why can't I use the rest of the ports on the ONT?
Only one port is activated with a Fibre broadband access plan. The rest of the ports are not activated. If you want to share the Internet connection with multiple devices, you can connect a wireless router to the ONT and connect it to your devices.
When I first signed up for Fibre broadband, I purchased a wireless router to use the service. However, it is faulty now. Can I connect my notebook directly to the ONT port?
No. Please contact our customer service at 1633 for assistance.
Can I migrate my Digital Voice Home (DVH) service to the Next Gen NBN platfrom?
Yes. We recommend that you migrate your existing DVH service once your Fibre broadband plan is activated.
Can I only subscribe to DVH+ on Next Gen NBN platform?
No. StarHub does not allow standalone DVH/DVH+ service on Next Gen NBN platform. You will need to subscribe to a Next Gen NBN access plan in order to enjoy DVH+ service on Next Gen NBN network.
Difference between Cable and Fibre
The difference is on the last mile connection using coaxial cable and fibre. Due to the different in last mile connection, coaxial transmit using Electrical Signal while fibre transmit using light. Once the connections are aggregated, data are then transmitted using IP packets into our network and to the Internet, and vice versa. Basically there is no difference in speed except for the different transmission medium used at the last mile. The difference is the supported bandwidth as illustrated below.
Type of Network | FTTH Network | HFC Network |
Downstream Bandwidth | up to 1Gbps | up to 144Mbps (4 channel bonding) |
Upstream Bandwidth | up to 500Mbps | up to 16Mbps |
