What is IP No Islanding?
IP "No Islanding" refers to IPv4 and IPv6 internet systems to coexist and accessible to each other.
What is IPv6?
IPv6 refers to a new form of IP address. IPv4 addresses are facing a shortage. IPv6 is a new IP address scheme that is a much longer bit addressing (128bit) and can support many more IP addresses as compared to IPv4 (32Bit). In fact, any equipment that is connected to the Internet must have an IP address to work.
If I am still on IPv4, will current Internet access be affected?
No, the existing IPv4 services and IPv4 networks will continue to work as per normal for the next 10 years or so.
Will the software and hardware that only support IPv4 be affected?
The software and hardware that only support IPv4 will still continue to work with IPv4 addresses as the Internet will still continue to work on IPv4 and co-exist with IPv6 for a long time.
Can StarHub’s equipment such as modems, routers and mobile devices still work?
Yes, both IPv4 and IPv6 will co-exist for another 10 years or so. There is no need for you to upgrade your equipment immediately. However, you may wish to consider buying IPv6 ready devices to ensure that they work with an IPv6 service or network.
How will I be able to use IPv6?
You have to ensure that all products that you use to connect to the internet is IPv6 ready including your laptop, modem, router, mobile phone, tablet, etc.
However, many major websites and Internet Service Providers will support both IPv4 and IPv6 and will do so for 10 years or more. There is no need for you to upgrade your equipment immediately.
How do I know if my other devices are IPv6 ready?
Please consult your supplier for the respective device.
