What is the English Premier League?
The English Premier League is the top division of English football and the most-watched sports league on the planet. It is broadcast in 189 countries to over 920 million homes, according to the Premier League's own figures.
The league was founded on 20 February 1992, when the top clubs in England's First Division voted to break away from the Football League and take control of their own broadcast rights. The first EPL season began in August 1992 with 22 clubs. In 1995 the league was reduced to 20 clubs, the format that remains in place today.
What makes the Premier League different from most other top leagues is promotion and relegation. Every season, the 3 clubs at the bottom of the table are relegated to the EFL Championship (second division), replaced by 3 promoted sides from below. This means any of the 20 clubs, in any season, can find themselves fighting for survival right until the final day. It is one of the reasons the EPL is considered the most competitive and unpredictable top-flight league in the world.
EPL Format - How the Season Works
Each of the 20 clubs plays every other club twice during the season, once at home and once away. That means 38 games per team and 380 total matches in a season. 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, none for a loss. The club with the most points at the end of 38 matchweeks lifts the trophy.

2025/26 Premier League Season - Key Storylines
Arsenal: chasing 20 years of hurt
Mikel Arteta's side lead by five points with 10 games to play. Arsenal's only Premier League title came in 2003/04 as the unbeaten Invincibles. After back-to-back runners-up finishes, this is the year the club's long wait may finally end.
Manchester City: pedigree vs pressure
Pep Guardiola's City trail by five points and still face Arsenal directly in Matchweek 33 (18 April). Despite navigating UEFA disciplinary proceedings in the background, City have maintained their quality and remain a serious title threat.
Manchester United: the Michael Carrick revival
Appointed mid-season in January 2026 following Ruben Amorim's departure, Michael Carrick has steadied Manchester United and guided them to third place on 51 points from 28 games. A compact, counter-attacking system has produced consistent results — a top-four finish is now a realistic target.
Managerial Changes - 2025/26 Season
10 managerial changes have taken place in the Premier League this season, with Nottingham Forest alone going through four managers. It is one of the most turbulent seasons for dugout stability in recent memory.
