Product Features

1
What are the benefits and features of StarHub Mobile Threat Defence?

StarHub Mobile Threat Defence, a mobile app powered by Zimperium MTD, addresses enterprise risk by lowering it from mobile threats and attacks on endpoint and apps.

Therefore, increasing the overall mobile security posture of the company. It provides full mobile risk coverage against attacks and helps secure your end user from:

  • Unsecure Wi-Fi networks
  • Mobile phishing
  • Unsafe apps
  • Other potential threats

This app alerts users if their mobile device encounters threats, such as a potentially unsecure Wi-Fi network. With each alert, StarHub Mobile Threat Defence will offer recommendations on how to address the threat it detected.

2
How does StarHub Mobile Threat Defence work?

The end user only needs to install the Zimperium MTD app to secure their mobile device. Developed for mobile devices, the Zimperium MTD app uses patented, behaviour-based analytics to detect threats on your mobile device. It has also been optimized for battery consumption and does not need internet connectivity to work.

The app can detect both known and unknown threats by analysing the behaviour of your mobile device. By analysing slight deviations to the operating system’s statistics, memory, CPU, and other system parameters, the detection engine can accurately identify not only how an attack occurred but also recommend actions to take to help keep your data and mobile device safe.

The Zimperium MTD app is unique with the on-device detection engine, and it does not require internet connection. The detection and alerting is real-time and no latency is introduced, and no personal data is sent to the cloud. This means that your device can be protected in airplane mode and when roaming – unlike security solutions that depend on internet connection and that attackers can easily take down when a device has been compromised.

3
How does the Zimperium MTD app detect zero-day attacks?

According to Zimperium’s 2022 Global Mobile Threat Report, zero-day attacks against mobile devices rose 466% in 2021, accounting for 1 in 3 in-the-wild attacks on endpoints.

Unlike legacy mobile security engines, Zimperium z9™ (the app’s machine learning engine) monitors malicious activities and attacks from the mobile attack vectors: Phishing, network, application, and device. Zimperium z9™ is resistant to evasion techniques such as virtual machine awareness, execution techniques, and binary obfuscation. This enables Zimperium solutions to detect and protect against known, zero-day, and new threats even when disconnected from the network.

4
What does the Zimperium MTD app dashboard display on the mobile device?

The three categories displayed in the dashboard represent the three possible areas for threats entering the device: Device, Network, and Apps. Each category can be tapped and provides additional details about that category.

MTD Threat Detection Interface

The dashboard screen displays a general status for all threat areas:

  • Apps: Scans for potentially harmful applications
  • Web: Checks for phishing links, and enables and disables VPN
  • Device: Scans for potential threats or risks to the device such as outdated OS versions or updates required
  • Network: Identifies and protects from threats to the networks
  • Threat Zones: Provides information to the user if nearby available networks should be avoided (high-risk networks)

Each tile is color-coded based on the status of that category, as shown in this example.

Colour

Description

Green

Verifications have been made and there are no issues found

Yellow

Threats have been detected during this timeframe, but none are critical

Red

Critical threats have been detected during this timeframe

You can press any tile to display a list of the active issues detected and view the risks or threats for that category. If, as shown in the prior screenshot, there is an issue to fix, you can press Fix to display the Full Event Log.

5
Does the Zimperium MTD app require any user interaction?

No. You do not need to interact with the app for detection and prevention of malicious activities. However, you can access the app to:

  • Confirm if it is set up correctly
  • Check if it has found any suspicious activity
  • View recommendations on how to decrease the risk of device attacks

6
Does the Zimperium MTD app scan and read message contents and attachments?

No. The app is designed with privacy in mind. It does not have permission to read your email, WhatsApp, and SMS messages and attachments.

7
Will the Zimperium MTD app send my sensitive information to the cloud?

The app does not have access to sensitive user information. During activation, it does not require you to enter any personal information or phone numbers. The app also does not have permission to view, store, or send any information such as contacts, emails, SMS, WhatsApp messages, photos, or browser histories on your mobile device.

When a threat is detected, the app sends the threat and device information to the cloud. This information is used to make the device owner aware and help take steps to remediate the problem.
