Singapore, 26 June 2019 – Some 5,000 children from low income families have benefitted from Central Singapore Community Development Council (CDC)’s Nurture Programme since StarHub’s support in 2011.

Nurture Programme is a weekly volunteer-driven programme for children aged seven to 12 years old. A curated 40-session long curriculum, the Nurture Programme focuses on training children to become confident communicators and acquire problem solving skills, strengthening their academic foundations and interest in lifelong learning.

StarHub has since contributed up to $1.5 million to the programme from the StarHub Sparks Fund. It will be boosting support again this year with an additional $100,000 pledged. The announcement was made at Edible Garden City, where 50 staff volunteers from StarHub took 150 Nurture beneficiaries on a learning journey.

Mayor of Central Singapore District, Ms Denise Phua said, “It is important for children to be given equal opportunities wherever their starting points might be in life. We want to level the playing field for children from disadvantaged settings by equipping them with skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and effective communications”.

She added, “Through Central Singapore CDC’s long lasting partnership with StarHub, we continue to offer opportunities for these children to become more confident; self-directed learners, and to be future ready. I hope that more businesses can join us in our passion to provide greater access to enriching learning experiences to children who might otherwise trail behind”.

“StarHub has consistently given back to our community. We support less privileged youths and families in their employability, life skills and connectivity needs through the StarHub Sparks Fund, the company’s community investment arm. We also actively involve our employees in our community initiatives, as a holistic approach to our community investment and staff engagement,” said Mr Peter Kaliaropoulos, Chief Executive, StarHub. “We are honoured to have been part of the Nurture Programme since 2011, empowering and providing children with special needs or disadvantaged backgrounds with equal access to learning opportunities. We look forward to this continued long-standing partnership with Central Singapore CDC in doing good together.”
