Employees, partners and customers shave heads in support of children’s cancer

Singapore, 5 June 2015—StarHub supported the Children’s Cancer Foundation’s (CCF) Hair for Hope effort earlier this afternoon for the fourth consecutive year with 93 shavees going bald in support of children with cancer.

Shaving their heads at StarHub’s main office in StarHub Green were 68 employees from StarHub, eight from subsidiary Nucleus Connect, two members of the media, 10 StarHub customers and one partner. 10 of the brave shavees were women. Five shavees will shave at CCF’s other events. This is the second year running that StarHub partners and customers were invited to shave with the fully integrated info-communications company.

Hair for Hope is the CCF’s call to the public to go bald. Through this symbolic gesture, shavees help to spread awareness of childhood cancer in Singapore, assure children that they are not alone in their fight against cancer and raise funds to help affected children and their families.

“Hair for Hope is a very worthy cause and StarHub is proud to be part of it,” affirmed Mr Timothy Goodchild, Senior Vice President, Government & Strategic Affairs, StarHub. Mr Goodchild, who shaved his head for Hair for Hope for the first time, led the StarHub contingent in this year’s satellite event.

“We can all play a part in helping the children affected by cancer, whether it is donating funds or making a bald statement and raising awareness,” he said. “I am glad that StarHub is a part of this noble effort and am extremely happy to help out.”

To support this cause and its shavees’ bald statement, StarHub will donate $93,000 from the StarHub Sparks Fund: $1,000 for each person who shaved at their satellite event. Including the $16,781 in online donations raised by well-wishers at the time of the event and $578 from merchandise and donations at the event itself, StarHub would have raised at least $110,000 for children with cancer this year.

One of the female shavees was StarHub staff Ho Chek Ying, who was shaving for the first time. “It is awesome that StarHub is organising this event for employees and its customers as well,” she gushed, adding that she was happy to shave for a good cause. “To all those children with cancer, always remember that you are the best!”

Tan Chee Tiong, a StarHub customer who was shaving for the second year with StarHub but is a third-time shavee, admired StarHub for supporting shavees with donations. “It is good that they support those of us who want to help the child patients,” he said. “And to the children suffering from cancer, I hope you will get through the sickness and be able to live a normal life.”

A surprise walk-in shavee was Li Bin Xuan from Huawei who was at StarHub for a meeting. “It is wonderful that StarHub is supporting children with cancer in such an interesting way,” he said. “I am glad to represent Huawei as a StarHub partner and shave with them.”

“This is a very meaningful project that is bringing tangible benefits to cancer patients in Singapore. As a partner of StarHub, we are very supportive of the project and are proud to be associated with it,” said Zhoubin, CEO, Huawei Singapore.
