StarHub First Singaporean Company to Win Prestigious Global Counsel Award
Singapore, 19 June 2013 – StarHub has become the first and only Singaporean company to win an award at the International Law Office’s (ILO) prestigious Global Counsel Awards, which celebrates the achievements of in-house counsel recognised by their peers as excelling in their chosen fields.
The in-house legal department at StarHub won the Team Award for Regulatory (Non-financial Services) at the seventh Global Counsel Awards’ gala dinner, hosted by ILO and the Association of Corporate Counsel, held in New York on 13 June 2013. Only nine Team Awards were given out that night across nine different categories.
Awards were presented to both individuals and legal teams working in the following areas: competition, corporate tax, employment, general commercial, intellectual property, litigation, M&A and regulatory services (financial and non-financial).
The ILO team received over 4,000 individual nominations from around the world. To identify the winners, in-depth analyses of in-house lawyers and legal departments were conducted. Nominees were judged on criteria such as effective communication, legal understanding, commercial awareness, depth and strength of team, and management skills.
In January 2007, ILO—in association with the ACC—launched the Global Counsel Awards to uniquely recognise the excellent work done by corporate in-house legal teams and individuals. The primary aim is to reward lawyers for demonstrable achievements across the full spectrum of in-house responsibility, and not simply those who have acted on high-profile transactions. Winners have performed above and beyond the usual requirements of their profession and position.
Ms Veronica Lai, General Counsel and Company Secretary, StarHub, credited her Legal team at StarHub for the win and said that “it is an honour for her to be working with her team”. She also thanked and acknowledged the strong support of senior management and internal customers at StarHub as important factors contributing to the achievement.
StarHub had earlier won ILO’s Asia Pacific Counsel Award in the same category in March 2013.
