StarHub wins prestigious Chief Executive Officer of the Year award at the Singapore Corporate Awards 2009
Second CEO award for Terry Clontz in a month
Singapore, 23 April 2009 – StarHub’s leading man has once again scored accolades for being an exemplary chief. Mr Terry Clontz, CEO of StarHub, was conferred the highest personal honour of “Chief Executive Officer of the Year” for Singapore Exchange (SGX) listed companies with big-cap (above S$1 billion) at the Singapore Corporate Awards 2009 (SCA) this evening. StarHub also won the Bronze award for Best Investor Relations in the big-cap category.
This is the third year the SCA, organised by The Business Times and supported by SGX, is giving recognition to excellent CEOs. Mr Clontz is the first CEO from the info-communications industry to win its “Chief Executive Officer of the Year” title. Nominees of this award were evaluated on their competencies in the following categories: Corporate Governance; Performance Orientation; Vision and Strategic Change; Leadership; Talent Management and Development; and Corporate Social Responsibility.
Barely a month ago, on 27 March 2009, Mr Clontz was voted the “Telecom CEO of the Year” at this year’s Telecom Asia Awards, which honoured the best in the region.
“I share this award with my StarHub colleagues, as I am fortunate to have a talented and spirited team at StarHub and a seasoned group of Board Directors who have provided excellent counsel. It’s a great honour to receive this award, and I thank the judges and sponsors for their support,” said Mr Clontz.
Mr Clontz was nominated for the “Chief Executive Officer of the Year" award by Mr Tan Guong Ching, Chairman of StarHub, who said, “It is my considered opinion that a great CEO is someone who has that unique combination of knowledge, experience, leadership, vision and – most important of all – heart, that makes that person stand out among the many who claim that title. I have met a few of such men in the whole of my working career, but I can think of no one more suited to be called a great CEO than someone whom I have worked with for over 10 years. He is Terry Clontz.”
Mr Tan is certainly not alone in his high regard of StarHub’s CEO. “The strategic objectives of StarHub have not changed since the IPO,” said Mr Ernest Yeung, Vice President / Telco Analyst, T. Rowe Price International (Hong Kong). “Terry and his team are very focused in growing free cash flow. They stuck to their guns and continued to reward shareholders with handsome dividends. They were not tempted by the M&A craze in the last bull market, and the rock solid balance sheet enabled them to sail through this downturn unscratched. The investment community has high regards for Terry and the team at StarHub.”
Mr Clontz is a veteran in the telecoms industry with 35 years of extensive experience. He began his career in the United States, and has worked internationally for the past 22 years. He moved to Singapore in January 1999 to assume the role of StarHub’s CEO. Although it started operations only in April 2000, StarHub is currently the second largest telecommunications company in Singapore. The company offers the full suite of Information, Communications, and Entertainment services over a combination of Fixed, Mobile, Internet and Pay TV networks. Today, StarHub's annual turnover exceeds S$2 billion.
