StarHub’s latest Wi-Fi endeavour to be largest outdoor deployment of wireless broadband in Asia-Pacific

Singapore, 3 March 2004 - StarHub, Singapore’s innovative info-communications provider, today announced that it has been awarded a tender by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) to provide outdoor wireless broadband coverage to the tarmac and apron areas of both Terminals 1 and 2 of the Singapore Changi Airport. Once deployed, this will become the largest outdoor wireless broadband service in Asia-Pacific.

StarHub will target this secured outdoor wireless broadband network, covering an area equivalent to approximately 15 football fields, at airlines and airport services companies. The infrastructure will support the de-facto wireless standard 802.11b (or Wi-Fi) as well as upcoming standards, 802.11a and 802.11g. StarHub is in discussions with key customers and solution partners both locally and internationally for applications that will take advantage of this network.

In addition, StarHub’s indoor coverage at the airport will be extended to cover the gatehold areas by the end of March 2004, given the increased customer demand for wireless broadband access in those areas. StarHub is currently providing commercial public and private wireless broadband services within most major indoor areas of the Airport’s two terminals, such as airline lounges and transit areas.

"We are delighted to serve the operational needs of cargo, transportation and logistics management companies using the outdoor areas around the airport," said Mr Kyong Yu, Head of StarHub Interactive. "High-quality wireless broadband access coupled with our strong service and support will ensure that these companies have greater flexibility to compete effectively around the world. This will inevitably strengthen Singapore Changi Airport’s position as the world’s best air transportation hub."

StarHub is the pioneer and leader of the wireless broadband movement in Singapore, with many strategic alliances with other wireless broadband operators locally and internationally. StarHub’s vision to converge broadband, IP and wireless services is aimed at providing seamless mobile and Internet surfing experience to corporate and consumer customers through Singapore and the world.

StarHub currently chairs the global Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), an alliance of fixed and mobile operators aimed at promoting the adoption of wireless broadband services around the world. As of December 2003, the WBA has 18 international members.
