StarHub is Asia’s first mobile operator t o provide gateway to Discovery’s new WAP portal

Singapore, 12 August 2004 StarHub and Discovery Networks have taken their long-standing partnership a step further, making the info-communications provider a key gateway to the world of Discovery.

Discovery Networks’ Discovery Channel, Discovery Travel & Adventure Channel and Animal Planet are amongst the more popular channels on StarHub’s pay TV platform, StarHub CableTV.  In late May this year, StarHub launched its digital cable platform and added three more channels from the network – Discovery Health, Discovery H&L and Discovery Science - to its line-up.

A month later, in June 2004, Discovery Travel & Adventure was also made available on StarHub’s i.View, a broadcast-quality delivery of cable TV video content via a MaxOnline connection.  The i-View service provides direct access to four selected channels on a web browser, with digitised video delivered through Microsoft’s Windows Media Player Version 9 software on their personal computers connected to MaxOnline.

Soon, StarHub’s partnership with Discovery Networks will extend to its mobile platform.  StarHub Mobile users will be able to access th e wealth of information provided by Discovery at their fingertips , as well as carry their favourite Discovery images and tunes with them wherever they go!  All these are possible with the launch of two new value-added services for all StarHub Mobile customers, on 13 August 2004 .

StarHub is the first mobile operator in Asia to support access to Discovery’s new WAP portal.  A ccessible via StarHub’s Gee! Menu, StarHub Mobile customers can browse the portal for interesting little known facts, and download pictures and polyphonic ringtones onto their handsets.  Each download is priced between $2.50 to $4.00.

StarHub Mobile customers can also enjoy another set of MMS and ringtone downloads from Discovery. This set, offered as part of StarHub’s Gee! Fun Downloads, is provided on an exclusive basis.  Customers will only be charged $2.50 and $1.50 respectively, for each download of MMS pictures and polyphonic ringtones.

“ StarHub is constantly on the lookout for exciting and innovative services that enrich and enhance our customers’ mobile lifestyle. The channels under Discovery Networks are well-known for their engaging educational content, and are very popular among our cable TV and i-View customers. As Singapore’s only info-communications provider with a hub of services across mobile, broadband and cable TV platforms, it is only natural for StarHub to explore ways to extend this much-in-demand information to our mobile customers as well,” said Ms Joanna Chan, Assistant Vice President of Mobile Marketing, StarHub.
