Industry Giants Battle for Charity at The President's Challenge 2003 - Gladiathon
10 Companies Go to the Games to Raise Funds for 12 Charities
Singapore, 29 May 2003 - Ten leading info-communication companies have rallied together to battle it out this coming August 2003, all in the name of charity! Senior executives from Accenture, Ericsson Telecommunications Pte Ltd, HP Singapore, IBM Singapore, MobileOne Ltd, PeopleSoft Asia Pte Ltd, SAP Asia Pte Ltd, Siemens Singapore, StarHub Pte Ltd and Sun Microsystems Pte Ltd have agreed to become "gladiators" for a day, to rouse their staff, business partners and the community to raise funds at this year's President's Challenge 2003 - Gladiathon.
To be held on Saturday, 30 August 2003 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, Gladiathon will be a fun-filled outdoor carnival for employees, friends and their families culminating in an evening of white-knuckled action of the main games. Managed by The Event Company (TEC), this event will see the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of these ten companies lead their teams through grueling gladiator-style games.
According to Willie Cheng, Chairman of the Gladiathon Steering Committee, "Helping the less fortunate in an imaginative and fun way is what pulled the 10 companies together. Last year it was swimming with the sharks, this year we willingly pit brain and brawn. The infocomm industry has shown again that even as we compete with each other for business, we can collaborate for the greater good."
Ms Lim Soo Hoon, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Community Development and Sports and Chairman of the President's Challenge 2003 Steering Committee said, "President's Challenge is about mobilising the community in helping the less fortunate amongst us. Corporations, big and small, also have a role to play. I am therefore very pleased that the CEOs of the ten info-communication companies and their staff are coming together to help raise funds for the President's Challenge, notwithstanding the difficult economic situation that we are in. I must commend in particular, Accenture, Ericsson, HP and M1, for lending their support to the Challenge once again after raising more than $730,000 for the President's Challenge last year."
Through Gladiathon, the organizing companies hope to raise over $1 million for the following beneficiaries: Asian Women's Welfare Association, Autism Association (Singapore), Balestier Special School, Community Chest, Hospice Care Association, Movement for the Intellectual Disabled of Singapore (MINDS), Muhammadiyah Welfare Home, Riding for the Disabled Association of Singapore, Spastic Children’s Association School, St. Andrew's Community Hospital, Tampines Family Service Centre and Villa Francis Home for the Aged.
The ten companies will use electronic mailers, pledge forms and SMS donation drives to help raise funds through employees, business partners, families and friends. The amount of funds raised per team will count towards their purchase of weapons and scores at the games.
Singapore Pools is the official Challenge sponsor for President's Challenge 2003 – Gladiathon.
