StarHub Brings Public Wireless Broadband Hubs to Where It Matters Most

Singapore, 15 October 2002 – Hot on the heels of the commercial launch of the first StarHub Wireless Broadband Hub at Suntec City two months ago, StarHub, Singapore’s leading info-communications provider, today announced plans to launch another wireless broadband hub – this time at Singapore Changi Airport.

Beginning late December 2002, travelers and local visitors will be able to enjoy extended wireless broadband coverage throughout Terminals 1 and 2 of the airport. This includes the Arrival and Departure halls, all the airlines’ lounges and all F&B outlets in the public area.

For the past two years, travelers passing through Singapore Changi Airport have only been able to use wireless broadband services at the central area of the departure transit lounge of Terminals 1 and 2. With the extended coverage provided by StarHub, the Singapore Changi Airport wireless hub will become one of the largest public wireless footprints in Singapore.

StarHub Wireless Broadband Hub at Changi is able to simultaneously connect hundreds of travelers to the Internet, or to their corporate data networks, without being constrained by wires or cables. StarHub Wireless Broadband Hub uses the global wireless the IEEE802.11b standard, or WiFi, as it is sometimes referred to. Customers need to only purchase a small WiFi-enabled wireless LAN card and insert it in their laptop in order to get connected to StarHub’s wireless broadband service at speeds up to 11 Mbps. In addition, they will be connected domestically to StarHub’s high-speed fibre-optic network, and worldwide through StarHub’s Global Tier 1 Internet Exchange backbone.

Until the official commercial launch of the Singapore Changi Airport wireless hub in December, StarHub will be completing installation and testing of the service. In the meantime, all interested users (including current StarHub wireless hub subscribers) will be able to use the wireless hub at the airport free of charge, compliments of StarHub.

Singapore Changi Airport’s reputation as an industry leading, innovative airport facility makes it an ideal location to showcase many new wireless applications that run over wireless broadband.

"StarHub is determined to make the hubbing experience more pervasive to all customers, whether they are at home, in the office, at meetings, or even during transit at the airport. Our latest wireless hub at Singapore Changi Airport is well-placed to become truly a wireless showcase for the whole of Asia-Pacific," said Mr Kyong Yu, Senior Vice President, StarHub Interactive Services, StarHub. "We believe that WiFi is fast becoming a mainstream consumer technology. Just remember - one day, your best idea may not come from your desk, but anywhere you go, and StarHub will be there to deliver the access and applications to you."
