7 November 2000, Singapore -- StarHub today announced that it has achieved its first commercial year target of 200,000 mobile subscribers, almost 5 months early. Innovative services offered since its launch in April 2000 has led to increasing customers’ interest and confidence in signing up with StarHub.

"We are very heartened by our customers’ resounding support for us and we are extremely happy to have met our first commercial year target way ahead of schedule. This is a great indication that our customers recognise the value and quality of our mobile services and we will definitely strive to continually provide innovative services to them", said K. C. Lai, General Manager, Personal Info-Comms.

In October, the company announced an additional investment of S$100 million to increase the capacity and enhance coverage of its mobile network to cater to the surging demand. As indicated in the recent IDA survey results published recently, StarHub’s mobile coverage now stands at 99.97%. StarHub has achieved this mark in just six months of commercial operations, a feat unparalleled by other mobile operators in Singapore within six months of launching their networks.

StarHub’s mobile coverage has achieved 99.97% in just six months and we have $100 million of coverage enhancements and capacity increases provided for the next five months. We now provide GSM roaming to 64 destinations, with over 50 operators more in testing. So, with StarHub’s offer of unlimited free incoming calls and per second billing on outgoing calls, consumers know StarHub offers the best value in Singapore," Mr Lai added.

StarHub’s 200,000th customer, Ms Choo Pei, in her mid-twenties, was given a warm reception at the StarHub Centre on late Friday evening after she had signed up for a second mobile line at the StarHub Shop earlier in the same day.

When asked why she had signed up for another mobile plan, Ms Choo said, "I have enjoyed StarHub’s mobile service for the past four months without any hitches, and gained significant savings for my mobile bills. That’s why I have come back to StarHub again to sign up for a second line."

As a show of appreciation for being the 200,000th customer, StarHub's CEO, Mr Terry Clontz, awarded Ms Choo with:

  • A lifetime FREE subscription to the Power Talk plan ($68 per month)
  • One Nokia 8850 handset (valued at $1,388.00)
  • Two nights’ stay at the Fullerton Hotel for two (valued at $1,020.00+++)

Recognising its growing customer base and as part of its endeavor to continually meet customers’ needs and expectations, StarHub has opened its third retail outlet at Tampines Mall (#B1-10). The latest shop spells convenience for residents in the East.

Mr Lai said, "The shop has a futuristic look with an emphasis on efficiency to handle high customer traffic. We are sure the sleek stylistic lines plus an open concept to encourage customers to view and feel products will be warmly welcomed by our customers."

Viewing screens will also be available to showcase StarHub’s products, services and latest promotions. More StarHub shops are in the pipeline.
