Singaporeans to Experience an Entertainment Extravaganza as StarHub Transforms Orchard Road into a Street Carnival

Singapore, 30 March 2000 -- StarHub, Singapore’s new info-communications company will celebrate its official launch this weekend with what is billed as Singapore’s largest launch party.

The launch party will transform the Orchard Road shopping hub, stretching from Shaw House to Orchard Point, into an experiential landscape of sights and sounds. The StarHub Launch Party will create a street carnival with the revelry, colour and gaiety that befits the occasion. All are invited to join in the festivities, which will begin at 11am and end on 9pm on both days.

Ms Shae Hung Yee, Assistant Vice-President, Corporate and Marketing Communications for StarHub, said, "This is a celebration by StarHub for everyone. We will have world-class performers and artistes, quality entertainment and fun activities. There will be something special for everyone. What we want to do is to bring StarHub to the people, and to bring people together to celebrate this moment in history."

The weekend launch party will showcase an eclectic mix of artistes and performers from various parts of the globe. These acts include The Pendragons (jointly presented with Lucent Technologies) who will mystify with eight popular feats from their world repertoire including the dramatic 'Impalement Illusion'. The Pendragons have performed in over 50 different countries to royalty, presidents and dignitaries. Now, they will be in Singapore to perform for us (see Annex 1 for Fact Sheet).

Making his first appearance in Singapore is Norway’s Svend Karlsen, one of the World’s strongest men. He was dubbed as the ‘World’s Strongest Man’ after clinching the world record for the ‘Yoke Race’ where he lifted 350kg and walked 20 metres in 20 second. Svend is 188cm tall, weighs 152kg and can deadlift 412.5kg. He plans to break his ‘Yoke Race’ record, so see him in action.

Making a special appearance are the world-renowned Giant Puppets (jointly presented with Nokia). They comprise a family of five puppets. The Tantanettes (a trio of puppets), Saga Boy and Tan Tan. This is also their first visit to Singapore.

The carnival will also feature the StarHub Patrol who will be combing the Orchard Road area, rewarding anyone who dresses up or are game to dress up in StarHub colours or those who are spotted with the StarHub logo.

Six 'Star Stations' will be set up across Orchard Road, with each station focussing on a specific theme. Each Star Station will run its own thematic programme with Star Quizzes and performances. The six stations are:

  • Star Power @ Lido Cineplex,
  • Star Vision and Star Focus @ Orchard Park (next to Orchard MRT station),
  • Star Solution @ Tangs,
  • Freedom Star @ Orchard Cineleisure,
  • Star Flexibility @ The Heeren, and
  • Star Innovation @ H20 Zone.

For the brave and fearless, they can try out the catapult stations, which are the largest of its kind in Asia, allowing up to four persons at any one time to experience the thrill of ‘flying’.

Ms Shae elaborated, "We want to give the public a show they'll remember for a long time to come. The artistes we've secured for the launch party are some of the most talented performers in the world, constantly challenging themselves to further perfect their craft. This is precisely what StarHub believes in - challenging the norm, changing for the better. It's just perfect that they're here for our launch."

To help you catch all the acts in cool comfort, look out for specially chartered wholly painted StarHub buses. The buses will ply between Shaw House and Orchard Point, and the service is free.

Members of the public who subscribe to StarHub services at any one of the Star Stations, including our StarHub Shops at StarHub Centre and OUB Centre, and a booth at Parco Bugis Junction, during the weekend will have a chance to win instant gift vouchers from StarHub. This will range from S$8 to S$8000 and are redeemable at selected merchants on 1 and 2 April only. They can also redeem these vouchers for StarHub products and services at any of the two StarHub Shops during the month of April.

"Depending on the gift vouchers they draw, everyone will have a choice to enjoy a movie, dinner, jewellery or designer goods on StarHub!" Ms Shae added.

The festivities on 1 April will culminate in an evening of wine, music and magic under the stars, with entertainment from the international acts and performances at Orchard Park (next to Orchard MRT station) from 7 pm to 9 pm.
