ISDN

  1. What is StarHub ISDN?
ISDN means Integrated Services Digital Network. It is a product that provides integrated voice and data applications along a single digital phone line. StarHub ISDN has two sub product categories comprising ISDN2 (dual-channel) and ISDN30 (30-channel).

ISDN2 and ISDN30 are based on the same technology. ISDN2 has two 64 kbps channels so you can juggle between general voice and data applications concurrently, while ISDN30 has 30 channels, and is suitable for more advanced voice and data usage in office PBXs (Private Branch Exchange) and high traffic call centre set-ups.
  2. So what are the benefits of StarHub ISDN2?
In line with Singapore's vision to become the info-communications hub in the Asian Pacific region, StarHub ISDN is the ideal platform to suit your growing business needs. You'll get:
    • Superior Voice Quality: Digital sound quality.
    • More Voice Channels: Two voice channels for ISDN2 and 30 for ISDN30.
    • Faster Data Speed: ISDN2 (12K) -- three times the speed of 56K modem ISDN30 (2.048M).
    • Versatility and Flexibility: Concurrent voice and data applications including voice communications, fax, Internet access, and video conferencing.
    • Affordable Bandwidth: It costs less than two of your normal phone lines for all the same needs.
    • Affordable CPE: All customers can get the option of the bundled CPE and pay a rental of just $5.
  3. What do I get from StarHub ISDN2?
    The StarHub ISDN2 package comprises:
    • Basic Digital Service and A La Carte Menu of Enhanced Services -- 17 VAS.
  4. What is an NT?
An NT is a device that you need to purchase, in order to use our ISDN2 line. It is shaped and sized like a normal modem. You can connect digital phones and fax machines, and many other devices to the NT. Another type of device is the ISDN2 modem. It is also shaped and sized like a normal modem and unlike the NT, it connects all existing fixed phones, fax machines, and computers. The StarHub NT is the Lucent NT, while the StarHub ISDN2 modem is the market familiar Eicon Diva modem.
  5. How different is ISDN2 from my normal telephone service?
ISDN2 is three times faster than your normal telephone service when you transfer files and access the Internet. ISDN2 also allows two voice communications to occur concurrently, and you can set up as many as eight telephone numbers per line, linking eight telephone devices. (Your normal telephone service can only allow one device to communicate at a time.)
  6. What is ISDN30 then and how different is it to ISDN2?
Another feature of ISDN is the Primary Rate Interface (PRI), or ISDN30. ISDN30 has 30 voice channels, 15 times more than ISDN2. It is typically used for connections such as one between the PBX (private branch exchange) and our StarHub network.
  7. Can I outgrow StarHub ISDN?
You can enhance your service with Centrex, which integrates your office phones with short-code dialling, and VPN, which converges your fixed and mobile phones to form your state-of-the-art yet affordable office network.
  8. Will ISDN adapt to new communications technologies?
StarHub will continually upgrade its network with new technology and services. You won't have to worry about choosing and investing in new technology.
  9. What about telephone service for my branch office?
If you are within the coverage of the StarHub network, Centrex ISDN2 is the ideal way to link your offices under a single private office network. You can gain common extension numbers and tie multiple locations together into one system. Even if some of your offices already have a key system, you can use Centrex to tie all your sites into a more cohesive and effective communications network.
  10. Can I handle my computer communications needs too?
StarHub ISDN supports today's range of computers, PCs, modems, fax machines, and other devices. Besides, it gives you faster access to the Internet than your normal 56K modem.
  11. How do I get StarHub Digital service?
StarHub ISDN is available only from StarHub, the local leader in telecommunications technology and services and recognised dealers and distributors. Our Sales and Customer Care will be happy to visit you and discuss how ISDN services can give your business a competitive edge.

  12. Why can't I get StarHub ISDN in my area?
Your area may not be covered by StarHub yet, but we will notify you once you are covered, if you give us your business contact. Currently, the StarHub fixed line network covers the CBD area.
  13. What happens to the digital connection if I am using both channels and someone picks up the phone?
Unlike analogue connections, the digital connection will not be disrupted, but the person picking up the phone will not hear a dial tone and will not be able to dial out.
  14. Do call charges differ from normal analogue lines?
No. All calls charges are exactly the same as normal lines. You can even dial international ISDN numbers at a guaranteed 64K bandwidth for normal IDD 008 charges.
