Basic home networking tips for DIYers

If you want to set up a home network, you can do it yourself without much fuss, thanks to the ease of use of home networking equipment as well as what MaxOnline offers.

Here are 5 tips that you may want to consider:

  1. Get an Ethernet modem
First of all, make sure that, when you sign up for a broadband service, you ask for an Ethernet broadband modem. This is because home network routers, which you use to share a broadband connection, require an Ethernet connection from your modem.

If you buy a USB broadband modem, you will face problems connecting it to a router. A plus point for MaxOnline users is that our cable modems come with both Ethernet and USB ports for flexibility and ease of use.
  2. Choose the right router
A router is a networking device that connects two networks together. When you connect a router to a cable modem, it is hooking up a private network of home PCs to the larger network that is the Internet.

Some routers come with print servers which let you connect a printer to be shared by everyone at home. If you want to set up a wireless network, there are several makes of wireless routers out there, including some which come with added security features like firewalls and encryption.
  3. Placing your router in the right place
To share a broadband connection, you usually have to place your router next to your cable point. If you have only one cable point – which is typically near to the TV set in the living room – you may want to install an additional one where your router is more conveniently placed.
  4. Don’t share your whole hard disk
Though you may share files among the computers at home, it is not recommended to share the entire contents on a hard disk. This is so that you do not open up your entire hard disk to intruders should they gain access to your network. Windows and Macintosh computers both allow you specify a folder to be shared – this is a safer way to share files between computers.
  5. Turn on the security
Remember to install antivirus and firewall software on all connected computers. This can deter an intruder from gaining access to your network. Also, if you are setting up a wireless network, remember to turn on encryption so your data is hidden from prying eyes while it is transmitted in the air.
