Anti-Spam FAQ

  1. What is spam?
Spam generally refers to unsolicited commercial emails which are usually sent in bulk for the purposes of advertising, or promoting goods and services. Please refer to IDA’s website and the Spam Control Act for more information.

Spam can generally be defined as:
    (a) Unsolicited bulk e-mail sent to e-mail servers (of ISPs and corporations) by guessing the e-mail addresses of recipients. This is often referred to as “dictionary-attack” spam.
    (b) Unsolicited commercial e-mail with
         a) fake or invalid sender e-mail address;
         b) deceptive subject label (or heading) that does not match the content of the e-mail; and/or
         c) no or invalid instruction for recipients to opt-out from receiving future email from the sender.
  2. What is anti-spam?
Anti-spam is a set of techniques deployed in products, services and software to reduce unsolicited commercial emails. However, anti-spam filtering solutions may not be able to completely block all spam messages from being sent to your email inbox.
  3. Why is it necessary for StarHub to have an anti-spam solution?
We have deployed an anti-spam filtering solution for our mobile broadband customers:
    (a) To significantly reduce the amount of spam our customers receive.
    (b) To ensure that StarHub's IP addresses are not blacklisted by other Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and email service providers, as blacklisted IP addresses may lead to mobile broadband service disruptions for our mobile broadband subscribers.
    (c) To reduce spam from users who may misuse StarHub's mobile broadband service to send unsolicited commercial emails.
  4. Why are my outgoing emails blocked?
All outgoing emails are filtered at our email gateway. An outgoing email will be blocked if it is detected as potential spam by our anti-spam filtering solution.
  5. What can I do to prevent my emails from being classified as potential spam?
Please refrain from sending unsolicited commercial emails.
  6. Is my privacy compromised due to anti-spam scanning?
No. We view the privacy of our customers very seriously. Emails are processed automatically at our anti-spam gateway without any human intervention.
  7. Can I opt out of anti-spam?
As the anti-spam gateway is meant to protect all users from spam, it is not possible to opt out of this service.
  8. Why was anti-spam not brought to my attention at the point of purchase?
We have implemented the anti-spam filtering solution to protect our mobile broadband customers. StarHub customers are encouraged to check our website regularly for updates on our network management policies.
  9. What does IDA have to say about StarHub’s anti-spam policy?
IDA recognises the need for service providers to implement anti-spam solutions to protect their users from spam. Please refer to IDA’s website and the Spam Control Act for more information.
  10. I am facing issues sending out emails. Who can I call to address this issue?
