Singapore, 21 February 2019  StarHub is pleased to announce that it is returning once again as the Official Media Partner of Earth Hour 2019, and its offices and retail shops will be participating in Earth Hour 2019 on Saturday, 30 March. Pledging to go beyond the hour, StarHub will also be turning off lights at its headquarters StarHub Green, during lunch hour for the entire month of March.

In the lead-up to Earth Hour 2019, a series of activities have been planned in March to raise awareness and inspire more to join StarHub and take a stand for the environment. To kick things off, the company will actively engage its employees by screening the latest documentaries from key content partners which include BBC Earth’sWild Metropolis and Nat Geo Wild’s Into the Okavango to share information on wildlife, educate and instil environmental conservation values. Both programs will be made available on BBC Earth and Nat Geo Wild on StarHub TV.

As a stalwart supporter of the world’s largest environment movement, StarHub is leveraging its pay-TV platform to provide free airtime for WWF-Singapore to help raise awareness amongst its viewers about Earth Hour. On the actual day, the StarHub Logo on StarHub Green will go dark; while lights will be dimmed, and television sets turned off in all 31 StarHub retail outlets around Singapore, including its authorised dealers. The company’s enterprise channel partners SalesWorks Pte Ltd, Intrahubs Pte Ltd and Insiro Pte Ltd are also coming onboard to support this great cause.

“Being an environmentally responsible company is one of our key sustainability commitments. StarHub cares for the environment and we take special effort to minimise our impact,” said Ms Veronica Lai, Chief Corporate Officer, StarHub. “This Earth Hour, we are pleased to expand our efforts to work collaboratively with our enterprise channel partners to turn off non-essential lights to pledge our support for Earth Hour. We are also heartened by the strong support from our content partners, BBC Studios and Fox Networks Group to raise awareness and inspire our employees to take action for nature.”

StarHub’s Green Movement

Going beyond Earth Hour, StarHub together with DHL and TES run an island-wide e-waste recycling programme called RENEW (REcycling the Nation’s electronic waste). RENEW aims to encourage and provide a convenient and accessible avenue for members of the public to dispose of their e-waste in a responsible manner. The RENEW programme has cumulatively collected more than 327 tonnes of e-waste since its inception in 2012, with the amount collected rising significantly every year. There are now 466 RENEW bins at 4181 locations around Singapore.

In addition, StarHub has also committed to increasing its renewable energy capacity by 10% by 2022, reducing its carbon footprint and reliance on non-renewable energy sources. Energy-efficient technologies are also used in its business operations. From 2014, paper bags were phased out of StarHub shops and replaced by reusable eco carriers; and paper usage in shops were also kept to a minimum with printing only done upon the customer’s request.
