Singapore, 13 September 2012 – StarHub TV is expanding its leading collection of kids’ pay TV channels with the addition of Discovery Kids (StarHub TV Channel 308) to the Kids’ Basic Upsize Group. The channel will be launched tomorrow, 14 September, 9am and will be available on StarHub’s TV Anywhere Internet TV service. For a limited period, from its launch to 30 November, StarHub TV subscribers can enjoy a free preview of this new channel on its TV and TV Anywhere platforms.

Discovery Kids seeks to entertain and educate children with content that sparks their curiosity and helps to develop their cognitive, social, emotional and personal skills, bringing families together by promoting co-viewing with parents. The target audience is kids six to 12 years old and their parents, with the core target audience being young viewers between seven and 10.

The core values of Discovery Kids include being transformative (by providing an immersive world that sparks wonder and curiosity), smart (by giving creative surprises for enquiring minds), playful (by stimulating learning and imagination in a fun and innovative way), and educational (by creating a trusted atmosphere for engaged learning).

“We were the first to bring Discovery Channel to Singapore when we launched our Cable TV service in 1995. 17 years on, our customers will again be the first on the island to catch Discovery Kids. Discovery Kids packages Discovery’s trademark informative content in an engaging style perfect for children and their parents. Parents will also be glad to know that they can take their children’s learning beyond the living room by catching the channel anywhere on their personal devices such as laptops or tablets, courtesy of our multi-screen platform,” said Ms Iris Wee, Vice President of Home Solutions & Content, StarHub.

“Discovery Kids will offer school-going children in Singapore an entertaining way to satisfy their natural curiosity and promises to ignite their imagination through stimulating and transformative programming. Parents know what to expect from Discovery – a trusted and safe environment for their children. Discovery Kids delivers on our brand promise to provide quality programming, now to a younger audience we hope will grow with us,” said Kevin Dickie, Senior Vice President, Content Group, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific.

Programming highlights from Discovery Kids at launch in Singapore include Discovery-produced HEADRUSH featuring Kari Byron from the popular hit series MYTHBUSTERS, THINK BIG, WILD KRATTS and QUIRKY SCIENCE.

HEADRUSH, an original Discovery production, provides children with an hour of games and experiences, with content and ideas from MYTHBUSTERS, a flagship programme of Discovery Channel. THINK BIG features journeys of young inventors who might just have the next big hit. From the “sibling alarm” to the “toilet paper headband,” each episode is peppered with fun facts, trivia, inspirational success stories and imagination labs to get young viewers to start inventing too. WILD KRATTS, an animated series created by real-life zoologists Chris and Martin Kratt, is a cartoon series with a twist - combining science education with fun and humour, young viewers can join the adventures of the two brothers as they travel around the globe encountering incredible wild animals. The series also teaches children small ways to make big impacts (such as building bat houses), while entertaining them with the Kratt’s usual antics. QUIRKY SCIENCE is a series that explores just exactly where science went awry and led to new discoveries and inventions. For example, how did trying to find a cure for malaria lead to air conditioning? What did the development of radar have to do with the microwave oven? Or what does surviving a nuclear war have to do with the Internet?

Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific launched its first network in the region in 1994 with Discovery Channel. It has since increased its Asia-Pacific footprint and grown its portfolio to eight high-quality networks including TLC, Animal Planet, Discovery HD World, Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo and Discovery Home & Health reaching over 555 million cumulative subscribers in 33 countries.

Discovery Kids is available on StarHub TV’s Kids Basic Upsize Group from as low as an additional $5.35 per month (with GST), depending on the number of Basic Groups in the customer’s subscription plan. StarHub TV customers with the HubStation, HubStation HD or HD Interactive set-top boxes can subscribe to Discovery Kids via Instant Buy by tuning in to Channel 308 and pressing the blue button on the remote control after the free preview ends on 30 November.
