Catch over 100 top celebrities in five concerts on one day

Singapore, 28 June 2005 - Each day, 30,000 children around the world die as a result of conditions brought about by extreme poverty.  In a bid to make this staggering statistic a thing of the past, over 100 of the world’s most influential celebrities will come together this Saturday, 2 July to perform in Live 8, a series of live concerts. Singaporeans will be able to join the rest of the world to witness this landmark event taking place in London (UK), Paris (France), Berlin (Germany), Rome (Italy) and Philadelphia (USA), through StarHub Digital Cable.

All StarHub Digital Cable customers, both digital and analogue, can catch the live telecast of the concerts from 9pm on 2 July to 7am on the following day. Live 8 will be carried over the Preview Channel (Channel 01) and HubTV (Channel 26), two StarHub channels that are available free to all cable TV customers.  There will be an encore telecast over the Preview Channel at 1pm on 3 July.

In 1985, Sir Bob Geldof started Live Aid, a series of rock concerts that raised hundreds of millions of dollars for African famine relief. 20 years later, Bob Geldof has roped in his friends Bono (U2) and Richard Curtis (screenwriter of Four Weddings And A Funeral and Notting Hill) to organise a series of free international concerts with unprecedented star power. This initiative, named Live 8, is aimed at putting pressure on the eight world leaders gathered in Scotland for the G8 Conference and Summit next month, to cancel the debt of the world’s poorest nations, increase and improve aid, and negotiate fairer trade rules.

Live 8 is not only a very meaningful event that has garnered much international attention, it is also a rare gathering of the Who’s Who in today’s music industry,” said Ms Sandie Lee, StarHub’s Senior Vice President, Cable TV Services. “This event is something we do not want any of our customers to miss, so we have decided to make the series of concerts available to them free-of-charge.”

To give non-StarHub Digital Cable customers an opportunity to catch the Live 8 concerts for free, StarHub will hold a Live 8 screening event at Chijmes, from 8pm on 2 July to 7am on 3 July. The public can catch live acts by local bands before enjoying the concerts on five giant screens from 9pm.

International celebrities appearing in Live 8 include Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney, Madonna, Sheryl Crow, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Sting, Maroon 5, Black Eyed Peas, Green Day, Dido, Bon Jovi, Coldplay, Linkin Park, Destiny’s Child, Robbie Williams, Rob Thomas, U2, A-ha, R.E.M., Travis, Sheryl Crow, Shakira, Sarah McLachlan, Craig David, Jamiroquai, Andrea Bocelli, Joss Stone, Faith Hill and Will Smith.
