StarHub Also Pledges At Least S$100,000 to The Boys’ Brigade Sharity Gift Box 2002

Singapore, 11 April 2002 -- StarHub today kicked off its charity program for the year 2002 by donating S$100,000 from the StarHub IDD Charity Fund, to provide daily meals to 830 elderly homebound beneficiaries under the auspices of the National Council of Social Services (NCSS).

Beneficiaries will receive meals twice daily on weekdays between 16 May and 15 July 2002. Currently, they are under the care of the following home help services:

  • Swami Home (450 beneficiaries; StarHub’s contribution: $54,000)
  • Dorcas Home (155 beneficiaries; StarHub’s contribution: $18,600)
  • Sunlove Home (125 beneficiaries; StarHub’s contribution: $15,000)
  • Moral Home (100 beneficiaries; StarHub’s contribution: $12,000)

These home help services provide the elderly with an accessible and affordable range of services, to enable them to lead a more meaningful and independent life. StarHub’s contribution of $3 per weekday for each beneficiary will ensure that their basic nutritional needs are fulfilled.

Mr Henry Lim, CFO of StarHub said, "Being clothed and fed are the two basic necessities of life and StarHub is pleased to extend a helping hand to the less fortunate to fulfill this need. Indeed, we are able to do so, thanks to our IDD customers. One per cent of the revenue generated by every IDD 008 and IDD 018 call is donated to the StarHub IDD Charity Fund."

Said Mr Benedict Cheong, CEO of NCSS, "Lonely and destitute elderly persons will receive warm home-cooked meals delivered to their doorsteps. This is certainly a meaningful and laudable initiative by StarHub which will bring cheer to the elderly persons receiving home help services."

One of the elderly beneficiaries, Mr Zaharee Bin Mohamed from Sunlove Home Help Service said, "I could not believe that there are still kind people around to help my wife and I, and I truly appreciate all the support given to us by StarHub."

StarHub IDD Charity Fund – Contribute to charity with each call you make

StarHub’s announcement today also marks a name change for the Fund. Known previously as the StarHub IDD Empowerment Fund, the Fund was renamed to augment its charitable efforts with the less fortunate in society.

The Fund’s objective is to provide direct benefit to the less fortunate in society by enhancing their education and skills, fulfilling their basis needs, providing experiential benefits as well as helping to fulfill their visions and opening new opportunities. In addition, it aims to help heighten awareness of the plight of the less fortunate and to encourage society to contribute in every possible way.

Since its inception in July 2000, the Fund has played an instrumental role in StarHub’s community program. Through the Fund, StarHub has contributed 437 wheelchairs to 21 charity associations, provided over S$100,000 worth of computer peripherals and food rations to 10 children’s homes and more than S$100,000 worth of electrical items and food rations to The Boys’ Brigade Sharity Gift Box last year.

Early Commitment to The Boys’ Brigade Sharity Gift Box 2002

Mr Lim revealed that StarHub has already pledged at least S$100,000 to The Boys’ Brigade Sharity Gift Box for this year. "This continues our commitment that we will continue to make meaningful contributions to charity," he said.
