Singapore, 5 March 2001 -- StarHub has hit the 300,000 mobile customer mark in just 11 months! This new mark, including both pre- and post-paid mobile customers, comes just one month before StarHub celebrates its first anniversary. It is an unprecedented achievement by a new operator, as the number is 50% higher than StarHub’s initial first year target of 200,000 customers which was attained in just over seven months of the company’s commercial launch in April 2000.


Said Mr. Lai Kee Chwee, General Manager, Personal Info-Comms (Consumer Market) at StarHub, "We are ecstatic to have been able to meet our first commercial year target. It is testament of the strong support we have received from consumers for StarHub’s mobile services. Many have recognized the value and enjoyed the innovation that we have brought to the market with Singapore’s first mobile pricing plans’ offering free incoming calls and per second billing."


In November last year, StarHub’s pre-paid mobile service, known as the Green Card, was launched. The company has also collaborated with Sony Music to introduce a series of limited edition pre-paid mobile top-up cards featuring Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez targeted at younger and trendier users. Customers of Green receive affordable rates with 125% extra calls with the most competitive pricing offered by StarHub’s per second billing feature (please see annex attached).


The draw of new sign ups was also observed when StarHub extended the promotion for Free Incoming Calls (FIC) promotion till end March 2004, for all existing customers as well as for the first 88,888 customers who signed up from 3 December 2000. The promotion is valid for StarHub’s post-paid mobile plans only and enables customers to save up to 50% on their monthly mobile charges.


StarHub’s 300,000th customer, Mr Lim Tiong Eng, an engineer, was invited to a presentation held at the flagship retail shop located at StarHub Centre earlier today. At the ceremony, Mr Lai personally awarded him with:

  • a lifetime FREE subscription to PowerPlay plan (S$22 per month)
  • a Siemens SL45 mobile phone (recommended retail price at S$888)
  • a Formula One package for 2 to attend the Malaysian Grand Prix (worth $1,298) inclusive of entry to the F1 theme dinner party and one night accommodation at the Hilton Seremban
  • a pair of complimentary tickets to the Formal Charity Gala Premier of the upcoming Eric Khoo movie "One Leg Kicking"

Mr Lai added, "Achieving our target of 300,000 mobile customers is no mean feat and we would like to thank our customers for their wonderful support. We look forward to continually providing more innovative and quality mobile services to our customers in the near future."
