StarHub IDD Empowerment Fund Brings Cheers to the Disabled

StarHub Pledges a Minimum of Half A Million Dollars to the Less Fortunate

Singapore, 13 June 2001 -- StarHub celebrated the first anniversary of its IDD Empowerment Fund by using part of the Fund proceeds to donate 437 wheelchairs to 21 community associations. Launched last July, the Fund was dedicated to supporting organisations that are in line with StarHub’s community program, with particular emphasis on those who have special needs. Through this, StarHub aims to empower individuals, particularly the less fortunate, with confidence and self-esteem to integrate with society and also to encourage greater public awareness of the significance of such support required by community associations.

For the past year, StarHub had committed 1.8 per cent of the revenue generated from its I-Call 018 calls towards the Fund. StarHub’s I-Call 018 is StarHub’s economical international calling service that provides users with quality, value-for-money and hassle-free call connections. Starting today, StarHub will also pledge one per cent of the revenue earned from IDD 008 and I-Call 018 services or S$500,000 (whichever is higher) to the StarHub IDD Empowerment Fund. IDD 008 service is StarHub’s premium international calling service that provides customers with high quality and crystal clear international call connections at competitive prices.

"By further enabling our customers to contribute to the Fund via IDD 008, we hope to raise greater awareness amongst customers of their charity contribution whenever they use StarHub’s International Direct Dial (IDD) services," said Mr William Tan, General Manager, Voice Services of StarHub.

StarHub's IDD 008 service was also given a fresh look with a new icon launched today. The new icon symbolises IDD 008 as the premium international calling service that provides customers with high quality and crystal clear international call connections. Comprising of several visual elements that highlight StarHub’s corporate branding such as the fresh green colour and the star, the icon’s tagline, "Clearly Better" showcases IDD 008 as clearly the better customer choice for important international calls.

Said Mr Henry Lim, Chief Financial Officer, StarHub, "StarHub’s vision for its community program has always been to promote learning and skill enrichment programs for the benefit of the less fortunate in our society. Our past charity efforts have always been carried out with this in mind. Our pioneer community projects included works done with Nanyang Primary School, Autistic Association of Singapore, Dyslexia Association of Singapore and TOUCH Community Services. In December last year, we donated mobile phones to the Vocational School of the Handicapped. Currently, our community programs include organising field trips to our StarHub Lightship for the less fortunate children. To date, the Spastic Children’s Association School and Autism Resource Centre have visited our Lightship."

Mr Gerard Ee, Chairman of Assisi Home & Hospice and Nominated Member of Parliament said, "StarHub shines and showers love through its deed of giving. In the age of rapid changes and focus on the bottom line, StarHub has demonstrated that there is room for compassion. On behalf of the many beneficiaries who will benefit from this act of love for many years to come, I thank StarHub for caring and for taking the action to share. Like the stars in the sky, StarHub has shone through to the hearts of all."

Added Mr Lim, "We at StarHub are honoured to be able to lend our support to the charity. It is our pleasure to provide the much-needed wheelchairs to the various associations today. We intend to continue to seek new ways to further develop our community program, to do our part to make Singapore an even better place to live and work."

About StarHub’s Community Program

StarHub’s community program vision is dedicated to the cause of learning and enrichment in Singapore, with particular emphasis on those who have special needs or who are challenged with learning disabilities. This promotes two of StarHub’s corporate values – Challenging the Norm and Nurturing Talents. The objective is to associate StarHub’s brand closely with its corporate values and communicate these values by:

  • empowering the less fortunate to gain greater self-esteem while developing talents/skills at their own pace

  • encouraging greater public awareness of the significance of such support required by community associations

  • promoting a supportive mindset and goodwill in the community towards such a cause and for StarHub as a responsible corporate citizen.
